Steps Prajal – Water Treament
For reclaiming polluted water, STEPS has developed innovative rapid action technologies that treat sewage / effluent water on line and in less than quarter of the time taken by existing STPs /ETPs. Conventionally, water is treated and released to water bodies, and thus never reused. But STEPS’ unique system cleans water to such an extent that the water is reusable, as critical constituents are restored, for non potable / industrial purposes. The process is different from river osmosis (RO) and other membrane systems.
Moreover the technologies developed by STEPS can be used to recycle domestic grey water for non potable reuse. These domestic units have small footprint and are easy to use, which housing societies / commercial complexes / hotels can adopt for water reuse, thereby alleviating the burden on municipalities to supply daily fresh water. In the same vein, the highly adaptable water management systems from STEPS can clean large water bodies like lakes, ponds, canals and rivers, removing odor, color and contaminants using simple application techniques.
Water shortages all over the world are triggering significant research and innovation towards water management and waste water treatment. While chemical treatments have their advantages, the possibility of creating multiple by-products results in chemical technologies being looked at suspiciously. The excess usage of chlorine and the negative effects on health are a good example. Conventional flocculation, oxidation, chlorination systems are no longer viable due to the high cost of treatment, low impact on nutrients in water etc.
The increasing use of water for industrialization, fertilizer run-offs into water bodies, use of modern life style products like shampoos etc., is increasing nutrient loads in to water bodies which get polluted by mechanisms such as algae, weeds, azolla, water lilies etc.
In view of the large scale contamination of our water bodies, chemical and mechanical methods are no longer sufficient to remove nutrient loads, bacterial contamination, sulphides etc., in an economic way. As such new methods are required to combat these issues and be able to deliver nutrient free water which is clean from bacteria, odour, colour etc., for human use.
We have to look at water treatment in a radically different way and with an open approach to water purification using methods which are close to nature or based on natural products. The methods suggested by STEPS are locally applicable at remote locations, independent of power and provide a quick solution at point of use applications for domestic, industrial, religious and other uses of water.
Technology for water treatment
STEPS has developed the following technologies for treatment of sewerage / industrial waste water
STEPSonic provides a safe, environmentally friendly solution to control algae growth and helps in cleaning ponds. It works on the principle of ultra sound and selectively destroys algae of all kinds without harming other life forms present in water. It reduces BOD, COD, turbidity and helps in the reduction of ammonia and pH.
PHOS-TRAP is a specially formulated and processed material developed from natural clays used for removal of phosphorus. It works on ionic locking principle absorbing dissolved phosphorus from lakes, ponds, effluent treatment plants etc. It has a high capacity retention of more than 95% from water.
STEPSORB is a unique filtration media for removal of arsenic and other heavy metals like uranium, selenium, zinc, lead, cadmium, copper, mercury, antimony etc. The specialty is in arsenic selective absorption capacity due to high surface area and pore properties. Arsenic below <2 micrograms / liter is achieved in a single pass. STEPSORB is equally effective on other heavy metals. Spent STEPSORB passes EPA TCLP and CA WET protocol for non-hazardous landfill disposal.
STEPS POROUS METAL MEMBRANE FILTERS:
STEPS POROUS METAL MEMBRANE FILTERS are specially designed and coated with sintered TiO2. These are high mechanical strength membranes with nominal pore size of 0.01 to 0.002 nano metres. These membranes cater to a wide variety of filtration needs. These are also useful for high temperature and high pressure bar applications.
STEPS Aqualizers are designed for removing or reducing chlorine, iron, lead, mercury or other soluble heavy metals. The STEPS Aqualizer is a cast catalytic converter composed of fused alloys of noble and semi noble metals and is installed in your water line. As water passes through the aqualizer, electrons are added to the water completing missing electrons in the constituent elements of minerals. They are also used for prevention and elimination of scale, rust and algae.
MICRO2 is a broad spectrum biocide, algaecide, and fungicide. MICRO2 kills microorganisms by disruption of the transport of nutrients across the cell wall not by disruption of the metabolic process. MICRO2 is not influenced by temperature and pH values between 4 and 10. It is superior to chlorine in destruction of spores, bacteria, viruses and pathogen organisms. It is effective for treatment of bio-sludge in the bio-reactors. It is also used for removal of Sulphides, H2S, sulphide control and microbial induced corrosion. STEPS has developed a grey water recycling system in combination with MICRO2 and TC 1000. This system consistently delivers superior quality water free of bacteria, colour and odor.
STEPS developed a six part water treatment to mitigate water related problems and recycle waste water into useful water. The six step method consists of the following:
- Destruction of blue green algae
- Rapid sedimentation and rapid oxidation to restore water quality
- Rapid removal of filterable reactive phosphorous from water
- Removal of heavy metals from waste water
- Reduction of under water weeds
- Control of effluent quality at surface level
These steps restore water to pristine clear water from a dirty, smelly and blackened condition to regular re-usable water if we follow the above steps. These steps can be followed as a sequence or as individual operations depending upon the type of contaminant to be removed.
